Workshop: Abstract Photography Responding to Hiroshi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer whose work focuses on how it serves as time capsule for a series of events in time. He also focuses on the idea of how something lasting only for a short time and the conflict between life and death.
Sugimoto is influenced through Marcel Duchampe’s writing as well as the Dadaist and Surrealist’s movement.

In class, we were given a task to produce images similar to Sugimoto’s work. However, rather than taking photographs of the objects in focus, we had to make the image blurry in order to produce the abstract composition that Sugimoto has on his photographs.

First image:
To edit this image, i decided to make it black and white to imitate Hiroshi Sugimoto’s works. Next I decided to enhance the contrast between the dark parts of the image to make the lighter parts stand out more.
Second image:
For this image, I also enhanced it by changing the contrast so that the dark parts would stand out more.
Third image:
In this image, I decided to rotate the image 180° to make the image seem more abstract. Similarly to the other photographs that I have edited, I also made this image black and white.
